Industrial Plant Mechanical Engineer
Baymag Inc., an industrial mineral company specializing in the production and international marketing of Magnesium Oxide, is accepting applications for an Industrial Plant Mechanical Engineer for its plant located near Exshaw, AB.
Job Summary:
The Industrial Plant Mechanical Engineer will play a critical role in the design, operation, and maintenance of mechanical systems and equipment at the facility. This role requires technical expertise, strategic planning, and hands-on involvement to optimize plant operations, ensure equipment reliability, and drive continuous improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will exhibit strong leadership, analytical capabilities, and a commitment to safety and environmental sustainability.
Key Responsibilities:
Equipment Maintenance and Reliability:
- Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to create strategies for long-term equipment health and operational excellence.
- Troubleshoot equipment malfunctions and implement effective solutions to reduce downtime and operational disruptions.
- Analyze failure data and perform root cause analysis to implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Identify, prioritize, and execute reliability improvement projects for critical plant assets.
Engineering and Design:
- Design and upgrade mechanical systems to meet production, safety, and compliance standards.
- Provide technical input for the selection, installation, and commissioning of new equipment and systems.
- Prepare detailed engineering drawings, calculations, and technical documentation using software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or other tools.
- Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines to integrate mechanical solutions into broader plant operations.
Project Management:
- Manage the annual capital expenditure budget, typically ranging between $2-8M per annum.
- Prepare detailed technical specifications, cost estimates, and project timelines while ensuring alignment with plant objectives and budgets.
- Manage vendor relationships, including procurement of equipment and services, ensuring compliance with specifications and quality standards.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary teams to ensure seamless project execution and commissioning.
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all mechanical systems comply with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and company policies.
- Conduct risk assessments, hazard analyses, and safety audits related to mechanical equipment and systems.
- Participate in safety committees and initiatives, fostering a culture of safety and accountability.
Process Optimization:
- Continuously evaluate plant processes to identify opportunities for mechanical efficiency improvements and cost reduction.
- Collaborate with operations teams to implement process enhancements and ensure seamless integration into workflows.
- Utilize tools such as FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) and Six Sigma methodologies to drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Team Collaboration and Leadership:
- Act as a mentor and technical advisor to maintenance and operations personnel, providing training and support as needed.
- Act as a subject matter expert, supporting cross-functional teams in solving complex engineering challenges.
- Foster a collaborative environment that promotes innovation, knowledge sharing, and professional growth.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of maintenance, inspections, and modifications to equipment.
- Prepare technical reports, performance analyses, and presentations for stakeholders, including senior management.
- Ensure all engineering documentation is up-to-date, accessible, and complies with company standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation or eligibility is strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 10+ years of experience in mechanical engineering in an industrial plant or manufacturing environment.
- In-depth knowledge of mechanical systems, including pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, conveyors, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
- Proficiency in engineering and reliability tools, such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems), and FEA software.
- Strong understanding of industry codes and standards (e.g., ASME, API, ANSI, OSHA, CSA).

- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma principles.
- Knowledge of environmental regulations and sustainability practices.
Working Conditions:
- Primarily plant-based role, requiring frequent exposure to an industrial environment with noise, dust, and varying temperatures.
- Regular use of personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by site safety protocols.
- Occasionally required to lift and carry items up to 25 kg and work in confined spaces or at heights.
